ROCK CLIMBING: In the mid 80’s, climbers discovered the seemingly endless cliffs above the New River. Now, the New River’s calico-colored cliffs hold more than 1,600 routes, making it one of the largest rock climbing areas in the world..and the world has heard about the New River Gorge. It’s not uncommon to find climbers from Canada, France - even South Africa – wandering beneath the sandstone heights. If you’re not an experienced climber, don’t worry. Climbing instruction is tailored to your ability level. All courses are accredited through the American Mountain Guides Association, and group rates are offered. Get some friends together and see how far you can push your vertical limit! Gear and instruction are included.
KAYAK SCHOOL: Kayak students at NARR learn from championship paddlers. Our kayak school staff is comprised of some of the country's and region's top freestyle kayakers. The highly-qualified instructors teach beginner and advanced kayak clinics at the NARR Kayak School, which is the the longest running kayaking program in the state of West Virginia.

MOUNTAIN BIKING: There’s no better way to find mud than pedaling a mountain bike...and with more than 35 mapped miles of single-track and mining-era railroad grades crossing the heights and hollows of the New River Gorge, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to go wild! Take the leisurely route and a low-impact spin along the river on the abandoned railroad grade between Thurmond and Cunard. You’ll pass old coke ovens and other remnants of the mining operations that gave the Gorge its first boom. Rentals come with equipment, a trail map, and advice on the best route for your ability and adventure level.

FISHING TRIPS: With a breathtaking gorge, historic ghost towns, and mild Class I-III whitewater, the New River is ranked in the top 10 smallmouth bass rivers in the country! Guests fishing with NARR have the luxury of boating in a specially rigged raft and guided by an expert fisherman. North American River Runners can provide you with all the gear you need for your trip or you are welcome to bring your own. Whether you prefer a fly or spinning rod, NARR is ready to get you hooked into some trophy smallmouths!
